SAILING EXPERIENCE

WHAT TO EXPECT

The sailing experiences complement and build on the learning that is happening in the classroom. Kōkōkaha sailing experiences provide the opportunity for your students to get out on the water and experience the power of the wind. Kōkōkaha sailing experiences take place over a full day.

Up to 30 students can participate in each sailing experience day, which are facilitated by Yachting New Zealand qualified kaiako. All the boats and safety equipment are provided, as are permission slips and RAMs/EOTC Risk Assessment & Supervision forms.

During the sailing experience your learners will get out on the water and feel the power of the wind. They will also participate in a series of hands on activities to familiarise them with some of the technologies used in sailing. They will also get an introduction to safer boating practices and water skills for life.

As shown in the video, the RŪNĀ sailing experience typically has two parts, although there is flexibility to discuss with your sailing or boating club as to how you want the day to flow. Most clubs will split each group of up to 30 students into two groups:

  • Onshore group: undertake a set of hands-on challenges to introduce them to some of the technologies used in sailing, this is lead by the teacher and parent helpers.
  • On-water group: goes sailing to experience the power of the wind, this is lead by the qualified club coaches. They have a 1:6 ratio of adults to students on the water. If your school require a 1:4 ratio, a competent parent can join a coach as an extra pair of eyes.

The groups swap for the second half of the day.
