Connecting global ocean learning with action in Aotearoa New Zealand through the RŪNĀ curriculum

The Ocean Race is one of sailing’s toughest tests of teamwork - and one of the sport’s most powerful ocean advocacy platforms. RŪNĀ brings that same stewardship spirit home, starting at your local club, teaching kids why the oceans matter and how to protect them.

In 2027, that connection comes to life: the fleet sails into Auckland 20–21 February, departing 14 March for the next leg around the Southern Ocean. RŪNĀ is partnering with The Ocean Race on stopover activations, giving Kiwi kids a front-row seat to the world’s best sailors, and a role in ocean storytelling and recognising the ocean's inherent rights.

The Ocean Race provides a global perspective on the challenges facing our oceans. RŪNĀ brings those ideas back to Aotearoa New Zealand, connecting global ocean learning with local action, place and community.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The Ocean Race learning resources provide a global ocean literacy pathway that complements RŪNĀ learning experiences, Moanamana and Kōkōkaha, by using engaging videos, teacher guides, student activity sheets and project-based learning.

Meet Wisdom, the world's oldest known wild bird and a legendary traveller of the Pacific. First identified in 1956, this remarkable Laysan albatross has spent more than seven decades crossing vast stretches of ocean, returning to Midway Atoll to nest and raise her chicks.

As the mascot of The Ocean Race and its Champions for the Sea programme, Wisdom embodies the spirit of endurance, adventure and ocean stewardship. Her extraordinary life is a powerful reminder of the resilience of our ocean - and the importance of protecting it for generations to come.

The Ocean Race learning resources are free to use and connect the excitement of a global sailing race with real-world learning about our oceans. Through engaging videos, teacher guides and student activities, learners can explore ocean health, marine science, climate, sustainability and ocean advocacy.
